For decades, the barrier to entry for developers to create and unlock the power of the web was code.

If you didn’t master JavaScript, CSS, HTML or complex modern front-end frameworks and APIs, you were locked out. A small guild of specialists held the keys.

**What once defined web developers is rapidly becoming obsolete:**

-   Knowledge of syntax and programming languages
-   Mastering libraries and frameworks
-   Wiring APIs and services together
-   Translating designs into front-end code
-   Writing automated tests

These skills used to hold great value, but are losing their relevance.

**What matters now lives on a higher plane:**

-   Clarity of thought and writing
-   Great taste in UX and UI
-   User empathy and understanding
-   Workflows and interaction design
-   Systems design and architecture
-   Innovative product thinking
-   Deep domain knowledge

These are the skills that cannot be automated away. These are the skills that define the new web developer.

For those who already call themselves web developers, this is your chance at rebirth. Evolve into designers of systems, products, and experience—or risk irrelevance.

For those who were never allowed in: this is your invitation. The web is now open to you.

You are now a developer.
